Installing the SMS Installer without a primary site server

Wednesday, March 12, 2008 in Technical Articles (Views: 2982)
Sometimes it can be so easy to change the behavior of a Windows system to make just about anything work.

Problem: SMS Installer, couldn't install it because my workstation was not a primary site server. The smsimain.exe file just expands the actual installation but actually doesn't install anything.

Solution: Change a registry key.

For those who need it, here is the solution on how to extract the SMS Installer without being on the primary site server.

1. Navigate to this key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Setup

(you may have to create a branch or two)

2. Create a value (DWORD) called "Type" to decimal 1 (0x00000001).

Notes: By default, your computer is set to 0x00000004, which is a workstation with the admin console installed.

A primary site server is 0x00000001, and a secondary is 0x00000002. Once the installer is finished, it should set the value back to 0x00000004.

Bug or feature? You decide.
