VB.NET to Sharepoint?

Thursday, September 03, 2009 in Technical Articles (Views: 3225)
So, if you've been reading this site for a while, you would know that I've been struggling with whether or not to take the site to Sharepoint.

On one hand, there's an amount of pride I take in writing my own website, maintaining it, with its occasional quirks and bugs. On the other hand, Microsoft pays a team of people to develop a website authoring framework, and I don't have to lift a finger to recode much (unless I want something to work differently). Sharepoint does what I had to dream up and make happen, such as RSS feeds, and a Mobile site (which isn't close to done).

It seems in my career path, that Sharepoint may be a necessary evil. I am going to work on it some, maybe put it in testing, and see if its something that I even want to pursue. I've had this site up and running since early 2007, and it's been really stable. It's easy to back up - it's a folder under wwwroot, and a SQL database. It's even running on a Virtual Machine, so really a simple VHD backup fixes everything.

Sharepoint takes a lot more horsepower, it's slow in rendering, but can do a lot more. Just have some decisions to make - and for what I would use Sharepoint for, could be a waste.

This project has been good to me. I learned programming in ASP.NET and VB.NET. Of course, I could branch to C# on Sharepoint. Ahhh, the ramblings and rantings of a techie...
