Portable Tivo on the iPhone

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 in Technical Articles (Views: 1743)
Tivo has a wonderful app called Tivo Desktop. Of course, with software, comes unintended uses for it that people come out with it.

One such use I found is how friendly and portable it is. First, there is a Windows 7 version - which really wasn't a big deal to begin with, being Windows 7 is a very compatible OS to work with. The unfortunate part is that they (used to, not sure if they still do) hard coded the OS compatibility into Setup, meaning that if you were running a service pack they hadn't released for, it wouldn't install.

One thing that Tivo Desktop Plus does? It allows you to convert for a mobile device on the fly - a good $25.00 upgrade, considering I did this in 2005, the key is a "once and done" upgrade, meaning that any future releases can use it.

So, I was able to take my iPhone on the air, and watch movies from North Carolina to Oregon without issue. Some may not like the small screen, but for what it's worth, it's nice to have.. I'm not into carrying more than I have to, and in my opinion, the iPhone is a single device that makes sense. If nothing else, bring your laptop with the actual shows, but the battery will drain on that much faster than a phone.

Before I forget to mention it... Duracell makes a great USB charging device. For about $15.00 at Fry's, I picked up this small USB charger that will charge any USB device. I picked one of these up before in Japan, but the charge worked off of 2 rechargeable AA batteries. The Duracell device is small, has a Lithium-ion battery that recharges with a simple mini USB connection plugged into any wall charger or computer USB port.
