Self Respect in Information Technology

Wednesday, May 9, 2007 in Technical Articles (Views: 6909)
Just a quick blog this morning on a thought I had regarding self-respect and your career.

When you go see the doctor and see the letter MD after the name, you have a certain level of expectation for the doctor's skill level. You wouldn't want just someone who was able to store up enough information to be able to repeat it on a test back in med school, then forget most of it a week after the test. I'll tell you, I've been blessed not to have such a doctor...

This being said, it seems IT certifications are going the same way... On one hand, some jobs require a certain certification level, and rightfully so... The certification essentially says "I am resourceful enough and understand the basic concepts of this technology", but should be backed by hands on experience...

Some people study just enough to pass a test, but learn nothing... I refuse to be one of those people out of respect for my career, those I work with, and myself... I would rather take my time, gain my hands on experience, and then take the test, knowing I have a fighting chance at passing the test based on what I really know - not what I am spitting out from a book...

To those who study just enough to get your piece of paper (and have no functional skills), I say this... I don't respect you, and you didn't earn what you have. I wouldn't waste my time blowing my nose on your paper certification. I find you are the folks who usually are the loudest about your certifications, until your technical abilities are called to the real test...

To those who study just enough to get your piece of paper (and were kind of forced into it but already have the skills) - I feel your pain... You have my respect based on the fact that I can trust your skills to get the job done, not because of the piece of paper...

To me, this thing with certifications has gone too far, too quickly - and maybe, we have cheapened the whole certification concept as a whole... Just my 2 cents for today on it... I can guarantee you there will be more to come on this later...
