Opening Help Files in Windows 8.1

Monday, July 6, 2015 in Technical Articles (Views: 1731)

Amazingly enough, even old technology can so easily be kicked by the wayside. But for those wondering why Windows 8.1 won't open a CHM File (and some programs still use them), prepare for a WTF moment.

The file opens, but displays no content except the headers. Among the various solutions, like reregistering the OCX file, really only one fixed it:

Clear the "Always Ask" prompt before opening the file.

Once I did this, the CHM opened with all its data. Amazing how some tried and true technologies seem to go untested. Hopefully, this eliminates a few headaches you may have.
