Finding all links in an Excel file

Wednesday, August 19, 2015 in Technical Articles (Views: 1931)

Most people who know me, know I have a deep distain for Excel. It is a reasonable tool, but in the world in which I live, people use it as a reporting rather than an analysis tool, which it was made for. For those consumed with where all this "crap" is coming from in Excel, a quick blog post on how to find all linked items to external sources in Excel.

First, all external links start with a bracket "[", so this is my guide.

1. Goto the Find command (Ctrl-F)
2. For Find What, add the [ bracket as shown below
3. Click Options

4.Change "Within" to Workbook (from Sheet)

5.Click Find All, and your links will appear.

Additionally, you can use the ! (exclamation point) in Find What to show all kinds of links, rather than just external.

Happy Excel-ing. :)
