Windows 7 hangs checking for updates

For those still running Windows 7, patches can be extremely problematic. Occasionally, that system will have so many patches to deploy, it will simply hang at "Checking for updates". This doesn't matter if you patch with WSUS, SCCM, or just plain Windows Update.
If this happens, there is hope. Install these patches, rebooting after each (even if it doesn't ask you to).
KB3020369
KB3172605
...in addition, you can also run this patch, which is the "don't call me Windows 7 SP2" convenience rollup:
KB3125574
After that, you should be able to patch normally. Another annoyance squashed, if you're not ready for Windows 10 yet.
