RemoteApp: Kill the cool stuff

Saturday, April 15, 2017 in Technical Articles (Views: 1118)
Seems the answer from Microsoft every time something doesn't work is to disable the feature, rather than fix the problem. Despite the unbelievable annoyance DPI settings have been in Windows 10, another pops up with RemoteApp.

So, the problem statement:
- You have a Windows Server 2012 R2 (or 2016) running RemoteApp
- When you click a button in a window, the window disappears. Good news is you can get the window back, sometimes double clicking or clicking the taskbar.
- Screen "freaks out" and looks like the old 1970's "off air" banner or if you remember scrambled TV cable channels from the same era.

How to fix it? Disable the cool stuff, RemoteFX which is the default RemoteApp rendering protocol.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client and likely create a DWORD named EnableAdvancedRemoteFXRemoteAppSupport and set it to 0.

You need to disconnect and reconnect from your RemoteApp sessions for the change to stick.

Hope this helps someone else out.
