Hyper-V 2012 Freezing on Server 2008 R2 Guests

Saturday, August 03, 2013 in Technical Articles (Views: 2510)
So, one interesting thing, and it seemed that everyone blames hardware (disk controllers for this). The issue: Hyper-V on Server 2012 became completely unresponsive to all VMs, thanks to a single VM.

What I found was a flood of errors in the System Log:
Log Name: System
Source: mvs91xx
Date: 8/2/2013 8:54:23 PM
Event ID: 129
Task Category: None
Level: Warning

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort1, was issued.

Of course, I removed the sensitive data here.

So, I found the offending guest - or so I thought. I had a VM I set up for testing, running Server 2008 R2 as a guest OS. With this, I found other issues in the System log. So, here's what I did to resolve this:

- As the Guest VM in question, I updated the guest VM Integration Components, errors were less but still hanging Hyper-V. In general, you should always keep all guests up to date.
- On the machine, I removed the Integration Component "Backup" (Volume Shadow Copy) and started the VM
- Was able to apply Windows Update
- Enabled Backup Integration Service

Problem solved.

I don't think a new disk controller would have solved this problem, only maybe prolonged the time to error again. There seems to be some real mixed reactions on the internet how to fix this, but this is the one I found effective.
