Easy check for a pending reboot for patches

Thursday, October 24, 2013 in Technical Articles (Views: 2641)
Here is a quickie, for those looking for a way to detect if a computer has a pending reboot, and if so, then perform a reboot.

First, look for any patches under this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
Auto Update\RebootRequired

If any are listed, you have a restart pending. You can also just create the RebootRequired key to fool Windows Update it needs a restart.

So, if you need to check for a restart, check this key. It would make more sense to verify you need a restart, rather than just restarting without the need.
