Selecting a Management Point: 2 Ways

Thursday, November 12, 2015 in System Center (Views: 2304)
One of the most misunderstood features of SCCM is the concept of protected vs. fault tolerant. Protected site systems like the Distribution Point are meant to keep traffic away from them that shouldn't be coming in, more or less to save on traffic and allow local clients to use the site system.

So, what about Management Points? You can do this in 2 ways:

Method 1: Use the "Clients prefer to use management points specified in boundary groups" option.
(Note: This requires SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 or 2012 SP2).

Option 2: Use the registry key "AllowedMPs"
Note: This option was part of SCCM R2 CU3, which allows the registry key under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CCM called "AllowedMPs" to dictate which Management Point you want a client to go to. This is a REG_MULTI_SZ value.

Pro: The client would be attached to this MP
Con: This client would be attached (stuck) to this MP

So, the bad news is you would have to reconfigure this key.

Just a quickie for those who may not have heard of this and to at least keep the website appearances up, that I'm posting. :)
