Troubleshooting "HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error"

Thursday, May 19, 2016 in Technical Articles (Views: 1625)
In my previous posts about the site being close to being available for beta, I moved my dev environment. In the process of doing so, Visual Studio would render my page fine, but IIS wouldn't with the following error:

HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error

The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.

Further data:

Module
IIS Web Core

Notification
BeginRequest

Handler
Not yet determined

Error Code
0x80070021

Config Error
This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false".

Config File
\\?\C:\inetpub\wwwroot\web.config

Simply put, there is a fix for this. I am using Windows 10, but essentially what I did was went into Programs and Features, and under IIS, enabled everything except CGI in "Application Development Features". After this, the site came up as expected.
